The National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT/UCC) is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). It combines interdisciplinary patient care with excellent cancer research under one roof.
Aim
We seek to build on the results of cancer research in a fast and targeted approach for the benefit of patients, developing findings further, testing them in clinical trials, and translating them into routine treatments. Our goal is personalized cancer medicine, with therapies tailored to the individual patient.
History of cancer research and treatment in Dresden
2003
The University Cancer Center (UCC) Dresden is established as a multidisciplinary center for tumor treatment, cancer research and teaching.
2004
The OncoRay - Center for Radiation Research in Oncology is one of six centers for innovation competence included in the Create Excellence - Foster Talents funding program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
2005
Start of the Collaborative Research Center 655: "Cells into tissues: Stem cell and progenitor commitment and interactions during tissue formation".
2007
The UCC is recognized as an "Oncological Center of Excellence" by Deutsche Krebshilfe (DKH). This title has been renewed with every subsequent assessment.
2010
The first partner site of the DKFZ’s Cancer Information Service (KID) is established in Dresden.
OncoRay is recognized as a "National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology" jointly with the Heidelberg Institute for Radiation Oncology (HIRO).
2012
Dresden becomes a partner in the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK).
2014
Germany’s Federal Minister of Research announces that NCT Heidelberg will be joined by a second site in Dresden.
2015
Work begins on establishing NCT/UCC Dresden.
2019
In summer of 2019, the DKFZ establishes its first branch site in Dresden.
2020
The new NCT/UCC building is opened.
2022
The new NCT/UCC building is extended and the third floor is officially opened.
2023
The NCT expands to comprise six sites.
Patient care
Patient care at the NCT site in Dresden is provided by physicians and nurses from University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden. Certified organ cancer centers ensure a high standard of treatment.

Research
Main research areas at NCT/UCC Dresden:
(1) Precision local therapy and image guidance, subdivided into radiation oncology and surgical oncology

(3) Molecular patient stratification of somatic and hereditary cancers
